On April 22, 2015, ground operations were launched against Boko Haram in the area of the Sambisa Forest Reserve in the northeast state of Borno, Nigeria.

Initial battlefield reports indicate the government forces had regained some territory and Nigerian Defense representative Chris Olukolade, in a press statement announced that the Army killed Abu Mojahid, a senior Boko Haram commander near the village of Alagarno.
